{"id":1000388,"date":"2015-01-13T19:15:35","date_gmt":"2015-01-13T19:15:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/asc-aqua.org\/?post_type=news&#038;p=388&#038;source_id=388&#038;target_id=1000388"},"modified":"2024-10-16T10:17:56","modified_gmt":"2024-10-16T08:17:56","slug":"first-discounter-in-germany-introducing-asc-certified-shrimp","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/asc-aqua.org\/news\/first-discounter-in-germany-introducing-asc-certified-shrimp\/","title":{"rendered":"First discounter in Germany introducing ASC certified shrimp"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"block wysiwyg\">\n\t<div class=\"container\">\n\t\t<div class=\"row\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"col-12\">\n\t\t\t\t<p><strong>PENNY, the discount subsidiary of REWE Group, is the first German discounter to introduce ASC certified responsibly farmed shrimp.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The ASC labelled Fish &amp; More shrimp is available in around 2,200 PENNY stores across Germany: giving \u00a0customers the opportunity to buy a shrimp product that can be traced back to a responsibly managed farm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;By introducing ASC certified shrimp we give consumers the choice to buy responsibly farmed shrimp, thereby helping to move shrimp aquaculture towards environmental sustainability and social responsibility,&#8221; said Thorsten Brand, Category Manager, PENNY.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;PENNY recognises the importance of responsible aquaculture. We are very proud of our achievement to launch responsibly farmed shrimp to the German market together with our partner Fish &amp; More so quickly.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Growing demand for ASC certified seafood<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The ASC certified shrimp used in the Fish &amp; More product comes from OMARSA in Ecuador. OMARSA became the <\/span>first shrimp producer to gain ASC certification<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in the world last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">PENNY is steadily increasing their range of responsibly sourced seafood. This new product joins their ASC certified pangasius, which has been available since last spring.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Robust standard for responsible shrimp farming<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span>ASC Shrimp Standard<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was launched in March 2014. Through ASC certification, shrimp farms aim to measurably reduce adverse impacts on the environment and local communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ASC certified shrimp farms must strive to preserve wetlands and mangroves; address the transfer of viruses and reduce disease; ensure the responsible use of water and feed; and address biodiversity issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To date 13 shrimp farms in Ecuador and Vietnam have been certified against the ASC Shrimp Standard.
