In Harmony with the Sea

Riservazzurra’s Journey Toward Responsible Aquaculture

In the heart of the Gulf of Oristano, on Sardinia’s west coast, Riservazzurra — part of the Waterhouse Group — stands out as a leading example of Italian aquaculture. It is the first company in Italy to achieve Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) certification for its farmed species: sea bass, sea bream and meagre. This achievement reflects a long-standing commitment to quality, sustainability and respect for the sea. The company produces 400 tonnes a year and sells mainly to the Italian market.

The farm’s 23 floating cages are located in clear, protected waters, far from commercial routes and pollution sources. “Working in harmony with the sea means acting with respect, without altering its balance,” explains Loredana Guariniello, Quality Manager of Waterhouse.

“The sea is not just our workplace; it’s a complex living being we interact with. Every action we take has an impact — not only on the ecosystem, but also on the communities that live around us.”

A Path of Growth and Collaboration

Since its foundation, Waterhouse has placed quality and sustainability at the heart of its decisions. A multidisciplinary team of veterinarians, marine biologists and experienced operators continuously monitors the production process to ensure food safety, animal welfare and environmental protection.

The adoption of the ASC standard has made it possible to better structure internal processes and strengthen collaboration across departments. “Certification helped us to standardise and improve communication within the company,” says Loredana. “Teamwork and constant dialogue between primary and post-primary production are essential for truly responsible management.”

Today, Riservazzurra holds regular meetings between management and departments to review sustainability goals, continuously monitors facilities and vessels, and performs regular analyses of water quality and marine sediments. Greenhouse gas emissions are tracked across all production sites, and all employees are encouraged to report any concerns — even anonymously — to help ensure continuous improvement. At the same time, the company maintains open dialogue with local communities, inviting them every year to take part in ASC surveillance audits or to share comments and suggestions about the company’s activities.

Antibiotic-Free Farming and Animal Welfare

One of Riservazzurra’s key strengths is its commitment to raising fish without the use of antibiotics. The company works only with trusted, certified suppliers and carefully chooses feeds that are right for each type of fish and for different times of the year.

Fish wellbeing is a top priority. A team of marine biologists oversee daily checks of water quality, oxygen levels, and the cleanliness of the cages, while also observing how the fish behave. By giving fish plenty of space and providing feeds tailored to each species, Riservazzurra helps reduce stress and supports healthy, natural growth.

People and Community at the Heart

The Waterhouse Group employs more than 50 people across its offices and operational sites. In Oristano, a close-knit team works under transparent contracts, following an openly published anti-discrimination policy and internal communication channels that ensure all voices are heard.

The relationship with the local community is another key pillar of the company’s philosophy. Each year, Riservazzurra informs stakeholders about ASC certification audits, inviting them to attend as observers or share their opinions. “We want our presence to create value for everyone,” says Loredana. “Listening to the community and acting transparently are part of who we are.”

Looking to the Future

For Loredana and her team, working in harmony with the sea means evolving together with it, guided by principles of circularity and sustainable innovation. “We are moving from the idea of a ‘work environment’ to that of an ‘ecosystem to be protected,’” she explains. “Certifications like ASC will soon become the rule rather than the exception. Companies that can tell and demonstrate their positive relationship with the sea will truly make a difference.” Her advice for those beginning a similar journey is simple:

Don’t think of certification as just a target to achieve, but as an opportunity to grow and improve. It’s a journey that helps you understand your strengths, correct weaknesses and build a more sustainable future for everyone.”

With passion, respect and transparency, Riservazzurra demonstrates every day that sustainable aquaculture is possible — and that working in balance with the ocean means creating a lasting balance between nature, people and innovation.
